FAQs

These are some of the commonly asked questions before people start therapy. It’s by no means a comprehensive list, so if you have other questions, just ask.

How can I tell if a therapist is the right match for me?

At its core, therapy is a relationship, and credentials aside, many people find it helpful for their therapist to be someone they trust, respect and even like. The journey you take in therapy may not always be easy or enjoyable, an it’s important for you to feel heard, supported, and not judged by the therapist you’re taking it with. We find it helpful to ask yourself the question, “does this feel like a good fit for me?” Sometimes you’ll know it right away, and sometimes it may take a few sessions, but we encourage you to trust your gut. The important thing is to find someone who is right for you and what you’re trying to accomplish at this stage in your life. Only you can answer that question.

How long does therapy take?

This is a great question but there’s no single answer to it. Not everyone is on the same path, nor moves at the same pace. Some goal-oriented therapies we practice are focused on solving specific problems, like getting over certain fears or phobias, improving communications in a relationship, or overcoming insomnia. These may be addressed together in a time-bound approach so when you’re reached your goals the therapy would end. Therapy that is more self-exploratory in nature, examining how you got to be who you are, and how that’s affecting you you live today, can take more time. Our goal, though, is not to create a dependency for you on therapy, but rather to help you take what you’ve learned in therapy out into the world and to live, and feel like you’ve gotten something helpful and enriching in the process.

How much are your fees?

During Covid 19 we are offering clients teletherapy conducted on a HIPPA-compliant platform or by phone. We request that you discuss fees directly with the therapist you’re interested in working with. We have a limited number of sliding-scale session times for people who cannot currently afford our fees including: students, people currently unemployed, and those facing significant financial hardships. If finances are a barrier to therapy, we encourage you to ask about availability of sliding scale fees. If we’re not able to accommodate you, we may also be able to provide you with a referral to someone who can.

Do you take insurance?

We do not currently accept insurance. If your insurance plan has out-of-network benefits, part of your fees may be reimbursable by your plan.  To find out if this is a viable option for you, we suggest you call your insurance company and ask the following questions: Do I have out-of-network benefits for psychotherapy? Do I have a deductible? How much is it? What percentage of my bill will be covered after my deductible is met?

What if I can’t make a session?

If you are unable to make a session we require 24 hours notice to cancel a session. We will do our best to provide rescheduled appointments if available. Outside of planned vacations, our expectation is that we will work together on a weekly basis and that involves your commitment to that amount of time.
